Since its establishment, Whitchurch Golf Club has been an emblem of golfing excellence in Wales. The club’s history is a testament to the unwavering dedication and passion of its members, who have continuously strived to create and maintain a remarkable golfing experience.
Situated three and a half miles north of the City of Cardiff, Whitchurch (Cardiff) Golf Club enjoys a stunning location overlooking Cardiff City. The clubhouse and golf course occupy elevated ground, offering breathtaking views of Penarth Head, the Somerset Coast, and the Bristol Channel. The picturesque setting is complemented by the presence of Castell Coch, a thirteenth-century castle reconstructed into a fantastical folly, standing guard on the nearby Wenallt Hills.
Whitchurch Golf Club found its first home at Pentwyn Farm in 1915, after two years of searching for suitable land. The initial nine holes were a product of Rhiwbina Garden Village relinquishing its option on the farm. Recognizing the potential for growth and development, the club purchased an additional 45.25 acres of land adjoining Pantmawr Road and Rhiwbina Hill in 1922. This expansion allowed for the creation of an 18-hole course, securing the future of Whitchurch Golf Club.
Today, the layout of Whitchurch Golf Club remains largely unchanged from its early days, a testament to the skill and vision of Fred Johns, the club’s first golf professional, and Mr. Marjoram of Radyr Golf Club. With horse-drawn machinery and sheer physical effort, they created a course that harmoniously blended with the natural contours of the land. Only the construction of the Whitchurch bypass and the widening of Pantmawr Road necessitated significant alterations to the 4th and 18th holes.
Whitchurch Golf Club has proudly hosted numerous prestigious golfing events over the years, including the Welsh Professional Championship and the Girls British Open Championship. The course’s beauty and challenge have attracted golfers from far and wide. In recognition of its excellence, the club has been awarded the title of best golf club in Wales in Bloom on multiple occasions and has been hailed as the best inland golf course in Wales by “Welsh Club Golfer.”
Whitchurch Golf Club has been a breeding ground for talented golfers who have represented Wales at both junior and senior levels. Nigel Edwards, a current member, has particularly distinguished himself, representing Wales in four Walker Cup matches against the USA and captaining the victorious Walker Cup team in 2011.
For both competitive golfers and those seeking the enjoyment of the sport, the course at Whitchurch Golf Club represents a wonderful challenge. Its rich history, dedication to excellence, and commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the area make it a truly exceptional destination and one of the first names on the list when visiting Cardiff for a golf tour.
