West Hampshire Golf Break

Overview

For those looking to keep travel time down from the areas of Bristol, Oxfordshire and the South East, our West Hampshire golf tour could well fit the bill.

You will base yourself centrally at Bartley Lodge, set between 3 of the finest golf courses in this area of the country in Stoneham, Brokenhurst and Barton on Sea. The golf courses on offer here provide a fantastic variety as you move from a heathland course located just outside of the city, to a heathland course in the heart of the New Forest, and finally to a coastal parkland course in Barton-on-Sea.

Two of the three courses on offer hold status and England Championship venues and one (Stoneham) ranks comfortably inside the top 100 in England. A tour which will favour those wanting to play some of the UK’s best heathland courses, whilst avoiding the price tag which can come from the big 4 in nearby Dorset. Perhaps this comes from the fact that compared to their Dorset neighbours, these courses fit more into the “hidden gem” category, despite their rich history.

Like many top courses, weekend availability can be a challenge to find, we recommend seeking midweek dates for this trip.

Just short trip from the hotel you will also find Bramshaw Golf Club which is the perfect 4th course to add to this trip for those looking for 3 nights and 4 rounds of golf.

Course overview

An England Golf Championship woodland/parkland venue which is quite simply worth your time. Situated in the New Forest near the village of Brockenhurst, the course is an established layout, having just celebrated it’s centenary (1919).

A Harry Colt design, the course is interestingly designed in 3 6 hole loops which combine to a par 70 at 6,200+ yards. Water plays a part on a few holes, and well-placed bunkers stand guard at a number of greens.

Ideally located on the way from the East when heading towards Bournemouth, the course is a favoured first or last day to a Bournemouth golf tour. It is also ideally located as a central point to other West Hampshire courses such as Barton-on-Sea and Bramshaw Golf Clubs.

Course overview

Tagged on our website under Dorset, however, this course actually sits on the Hampshire side of the South Coast border. Barton-on-Sea is a traditional links course with 27 holes of fantastic golf. The 27 are made up of the original 18 laid out over a period between the late 1800’s and mid-1940’s, with the newer 9 laid out in 1992. A rare occurrence of 3 loops of 9 holes of equal quality, however the often favoured 9’s are Becton and Needles which combine to a par 72 measuring over 6,400 yards.

The courses are hard to categorise and have elements of parkland, links, lakes and heathland about them. We have categorised as parkland on the website but cliff-top links would perhaps be more suitable.

A very high quality course where it really is worth playing all 27 during your stay. With a full membership, tee time priority is given to members meaning visitor times are strictly adhered to and unfortunately visitors are unable to visit at a weekend.

Sitting as one of our most Easterly courses, we suggest Barton-on-Sea is best utilised as a first or last day course for those travelling from the East of the UK for a Dorset based golf tour.

Course overview

Right there with the Old Course at Sunningdale, another of Willie Park Jnr’s creations, one of the best inland courses in England” is how Ken Brown describes Stoneham.

An established heathland course, having celebrated its centenary in 2008, Stoneham is a championship venue with a history of hosting big events, starting with the very first British Masters back in 1946.

Perhaps it’s modest 6,400 yards limits it’s ability to host more major events in modern times, but this certainly does not detract from the experience as a visitor.

This flawless heathland twists and turns through the deer park offering a classic test of golf where power is not the deciding factor. Only solid course management here will suffice.

Certainly not a club standing still, the club has seen major recent investment both on and off course including a new driving range, course irrigation system and a refreshed clubhouse.

This England Golf championship venue and England’s 69th ranked golf course is the perfect stop off en route to one of our popular Bournemouth tours or as a centre piece to a West Hampshire tour alongside the likes of the fantastic Brokenhurst and Barton on Sea.

We make changes as stress free as possible (just see our reviews for evidence of this!). Changes can be made up to 6 weeks prior to your break. Some changes are unavoidable so for legitimate reasons we will endeavour to make last minute changes after this period, but as we would have paid our venues at this point, this would be at the discretion of the venue(s) you are visiting.

  • How are package prices displayed on our website?

Prices on our our website are displayed in two ways. The first is on our Resort pages where pricing tables show the from prices for low, mid and high season golf stay and play package rates at golf resort venues.

The second is on our example tour package pages. There are often 4 prices shown here, two for low season and two for high season. The struck through price typically shows the highest price the tour can be and is often active over weekends in that season. The offer price is typically a mid week price.

Every tour quote we offer is bespoke and will vary based on a number of factors including the date, availability, group size, room type, time of day for the tee time, etc… Our package pricing is a guide to the cost of the package and is not a firm price. Please enquire for an exact cost.

We aim to provide as accurate a price as possible and therefore try to avoid using shoulder/mid season pricing or twilight green fee rates when displaying rates. You may find an intermediate price for breaks in months of April & October at certain venues.
